Chocolate covered potatoes or chocolate salty balls
The first time I saw potato chips covered in chocolate, which is an "omiyage" (souvenir) produced by a Sapporo omiyage company called Royce, I was skeptical. It turns out to be quite good, though.
This week, our university coop started selling "Choco balls" with the new taste of potato chips. These are small balls of chocolate, originally with peanuts inside. There are also caramel or cola versions available, and now also with finely cut potato chips inside. My colleague bought a packet and gave me a bunch of chocolate balls. They were pretty OK, though caramel is still my favorite.
Before I moved to Japan I watched the South Park TV show. There was an episode with a funny song about the chefs "chocolate salty balls", which sounded pretty dirty. Here in Japan you can buy chocolate salty balls (from other brands than Choco ball too) and no one seems to think there is anything dirty about the name.
